1. Efficiency Formulations and Conversions

System performance is evaluated across three primary efficiency metrics:

Coefficient of Performance (COP)

The dimensionless ratio of thermal energy output to electrical energy input: $$\text{COP} = \frac{Q_{\text{output}}}{W_{\text{input}}}$$ (Where both thermal output $Q$ and electrical input $W$ are converted to identical power units, such as Watts).

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)

The ratio of net cooling capacity in BTUs per hour ($\text{BTU/h}$) to total electrical input in Watts ($\text{W}$) measured under steady-state test conditions: $$\text{EER} = \frac{\text{Capacity (BTU/h)}}{\text{Power (Watts)}}$$

Mathematical Conversion Factor

2. Historical Evolution: ARI 330 to ISO 13256-1

Testing standards ensure consistent baseline ratings across different equipment manufacturers:

  • Legacy ARI 330 Standard: Developed by the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) specifically for Ground-Source Closed-Loop Heat Pumps (GSHP). Under ARI 330, cooling ratings were established at 77°F (25°C) entering water temperature, and heating ratings at 32°F (0°C), including fluid pumping power allowances.
  • Transition to ISO 13256-1: On January 1, 2000, ARI 330 (along with ARI 320 and ARI 325) was officially superseded by ANSI/AHRI/ASHRAE/ISO Standard 13256-1, creating a unified international testing standard for water-source and ground-loop heat pumps.
