Reversing valves (4-way pilot-operated valves) control refrigerant flow direction in heat pumps, enabling switching between cooling and heating modes. Diagnosing whether a malfunction stems from an electrical solenoid failure, low pressure differential, or internal mechanical leakage requires a systematic testing process.


1. Diagnostic Procedures for 4-Way Reversing Valves

Reversing valves utilize a pilot solenoid valve to redirect high and low-side pressures to opposite ends of an internal slider mechanism.

Crossover Temperature Leakage Test

Internal slider leakage allows hot discharge gas to bleed directly into the low-pressure suction line, reducing capacity and mimicking compressor valve failure.

  • Procedure: Measure surface temperatures on all four copper tubes connected to the valve body.
  • Evaluation: If the suction pipe leaving the valve is significantly warmer than the suction pipe entering the valve from the evaporator, gas is bypassing the internal slider seal.
